Synopsis

Tribute-by-Nora-Roberts-book-reviewThe #1 New York Times bestselling author presents yet another blockbuster novel, the story of a big-screen legend, a small-town scandal and a young woman caught up in the secrets and shadows of both. Cilla McGowan, a former child star, has found a more satisfying life restoring homes. So she comes to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley to save the dilapidated farmhouse that once belonged to her grandmother—a legendary actress who died of an overdose more than thirty years ago.

Plunging into the project with gusto, Cilla’s almost too busy and exhausted to notice her neighbor, graphic novelist Ford Sawyer. Determined not to carry on the family tradition of ill-fated romances, Cilla steels herself against Ford’s quirky charm, though she can’t help indulging in a little fantasy.

But it’s reality that holds its share of dangers for Cilla. A cache of unsigned letters found in the attic points to a mysterious romance in her grandmother’s life—and may be the catalyst for a frightening, violent assault. And if Cilla and Ford are unable to sort out who is targeting her and why, she may, like her world-famous grandmother, be cut down in the prime of her life.

Review

Cilla McGowan belonging to a family of performers was once a famous child star. Her grandmother was a famous actor and singer and her mother was also in the show bizz. Cilla is now working on becoming a building contractor. Cilla has returned to Virginia in order to restore her grandmother’s farmhouse which was neglected for the past 3 decades since her death. Things get twisted when an unknown entity vandalizes the property and she is assaulted. Cilla grandmother lost her life at the age of 49 and it was assumed that her death was a result was an overdose. But Cilla starts getting suspicious about her grandmother death after her property is vandalized and her best friend is attacked.

Cilla, busy with her renovation of her newly inherited property is definitely not looking for an affair. But the guy staying across the road Ford Sawyer and his dog is slowly growing up on her. Ford writes and draws graphic novels for a living. He is intrigued with Cilla from the first meet and she becomes an inspiration for his next graphic novel. Their relationship gradually progresses, it’s not rushed. When Cilla is targeted again and again by an unknown force, Ford becomes protective and realizes his love for her.

Ford is the life of the book. He makes sure the reader falls for his charm. As Cilla and Ford explore their relationship, the menace surrounding them intensifies. The whole mystery surrounding the death of Cilla’s grandmother could have been written well. It’s no secret that Nora is a fabulous story teller when it comes to romance, but I cannot say the same for her narration of mystery. The mystery part keeps on dragging and it tests the patience of the reader as it’s not built up properly.

What I enjoyed while reading the book? Its main lead Ford Sawyer – his geekiness, his charm, his love and protectiveness towards Cilla makes the story enjoyable. The dream sequences between Cilla and her grandmother is written in such a way…it gives a peek into the past of the latter and by those dream sequences we get a glimpse of a former Super star. The one liner in the book is again a plus point.

The book did not really bug me that much. Could have been a quick read if it was edited out properly. I would give this book 3 star.
