Love Story by Erich Segal: Love story written by Erich Segal was first published in the year 1970. Love Story became the top-selling work of fiction for all of 1970 in the United States, and was translated into more than 20 languages. Later the movie adaptation was released in the same year December 1970.

Synopsis

Oliver Barrett IV, a wealthy jock from a stuffy WASP family on his way to a Harvard degree and a career in law… Jenny Cavilleri, a sharp-tongued, working-class beauty studying music at Radcliffe.

Opposites in nearly every way, Oliver and Jenny are kindred spirits from vastly different worlds. Falling deeply and powerfully, their attraction to one another defies everything they have ever believed as they share a passion far greater than anything they dreamed possible… and explore the wonder of a love that must end too soon.

One of the most adored novels of our time, this is the book that defined a generation – a story of uncompromising devotion, of life as it really is… and love that changes everything

Review

Love-Story-by-Erich-SegalThe story is very simple.. a rich Harvard jock Oliver Barrett IV falls in love with a Radcliffe student Jennifer Cavilleri. Since Oliver is from a rich family, naturally his father Oliver Barrett III is not ecstatic about the relationship. Going against his father, Oliver marries Jenny. Jenny a musical student leaves her scholarship and starts doing odd jobs to support her and also Oliver.

Everything seems going fine for the couple except a crack in the relationship between Oliver and his father. Time passes.. Oliver graduates from his Law school and gets employed in a reputed firm. Jen and Oliver think it’s the right time to have a baby. Horror struck when Oliver comes to know, Jen is having a terminal disease and she doesn’t have much time left.

Erich Segal has done a wonderful job with bringing two opposite characters and making them fall in love. I loved Jenny. She is simply amazing. She is witty, sarcastic, funny, caring, sentimental and loving. She believes “Love means never having to say you’re sorry”.

Oliver Barrett is charming. But moreover he is strong. He knows Jen is dying and tries to act normal for her sake. Of course, he didn’t have to do that because Jen herself is very strong or should I say Strongest of the two?

I loved everything about the book. Every dialogue and every scene I have lived with the Jen and Oliver. My heart was torn when Jen says she doesn’t have much time. Erich Segal did not wait till the end to let the readers know Jen dies, He starts the story with Jen’s death. Still in the end, her death hits hard.

The book is short, sweet and definitely leaves a scar in the end. I rate this book 4 star.

Favorite quotes from the book

“What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died?”

“you don’t know about falling off cliffs, Preppie,’ she said.’you never fell off one in your god damn life.’

‘Yeah,’ I said, recovering the power of speech. ‘When I met you.”

“Love Means Not Ever Having to Say You’re Sorry.”

“And then I did what I had never done in his presence, much less in his arms. I cried.”
