Book Review: Every Breath

There are few auto-buy authors for me and Nicholas Sparks tops the list since a decade. He can write a grocery list and I would buy it happily. I have read all his works and have enjoyed them (let’s forget about Two by Two and See Me).

He is a good storyteller and his writing reflects the emotions beautifully. I don’t think I need to talk about his letter writings. He is a pro when it comes to them! Saying all this and reading all his works, I was a bit skeptical about this one. His recent works had failed to impress me and I had prepped myself about reading Every Breath without having an ounce of expectations.

“There are stories that rise from mysterious, unknown places and others that are discovered, a gift from someone else”.

In North Carolina beach near a sand dune, there is a mysterious mailbox by the name Kindred Spirit which belongs to no one and the same time to everyone. Stories through letters are left behind in the mailbox by visitors and anybody can read it. Our author Nicholas Sparks hears about this Kindred Spirits and comes across a letter which acts as a catalyst for his new book “Every Breath”. After reading the letters and seeing the drawings, Sparks decide to hunt for the couple in the story. During his heist, he comes across Hope Anderson and Tru Walls who are our protagonists.

The story starts with Tru Walls, a 42-year-old divorcee residing in Zimbabwe. He works as a safari guide and has a 10-year-old son from his previous marriage. A plane ticket and letter from his dying father brings Tru to the coast of North Carolina. His sole purpose of this visit is to know about his mother who died in a fire accident when he was young. During his stay in the states, he not only meets his biological father for the first time and he also meets Hope Anderson, who becomes his everything.

Hope Anderson, a 36-year-old dealing with her recent breakup from her boyfriend Josh and hearing the news of her father’s illness, decides to go North Carolina with the intention of spending some ME TIME and attend her friend’s wedding. What she didn’t anticipate during her visit is meeting Tru Walls or falling in love with him.

Every Breath is a heart-wrenching story of two individuals coming together, falling in love and due to circumstances (which could have been avoided) part ways. The two decades spent apart doesn’t diminish their love for each other instead of with every breath the love and adoration just strengthens.

If you are expecting a brilliant romance which will blow your mind or twist a rusted knife in your guts… it’s not going to happen with “Every Breath”. The book does offer you a variety of emotions like joy, despair, frustration and hope. The one emotion I felt strongly during the book was frustration. Hope Anderson really did get on my nerves with her reasons for not choosing Tru Walls over Josh.

I wouldn’t have been disappointed or frustrated with Hope if her reasons to not stay with Tru were anything but this! I mean the lady practically threw up her future with Tru Walls just because he is Sterile. If this is the case, portraying the relationship of Hope and Tru as true love was wrong. Hope Anderson is very selfish; where Tru was ready to make sacrifices for the sake of his love she makes it clear that all she needs is a baby to complete her. This obstacle for their separation should be clearly blamed on Hope and nobody else.

I did not find the book a page-turner and I struggled with curbing my irritation over Hope Anderson. This is not the best work of Sparks. But I had started with the book with no expectations and that saved me. Sparks should really wake up and realize that the greatest strength of his is the dialogues and Every Breath lacks them. The story is predictable. There are no twists or turns and no secondary characters to keep the readers occupied. The book is a one time read. If you enjoy romance with love, at first sight, this does fit the bill.

Don’t expect much and you won’t be disappointed. I give this book 2.5 stars.
